Description

Publishing consultant Howard Gutenberg is wondering which strategy he will recommend to BioOne — a financially sustainable non-profit organization operating in the scientific publishing arena. The organization’s subscription model and online platform have allowed it to put money back into the academic community through a competitive royalty system. Nevertheless, open access (OA) publishing — a system in which content is made available to users free of charge through author- or funder-paid article processing charges — was gaining steam, while disruptive technologies were rendering traditional journals obsolete. Would the organization be able to generate enough revenue from processing charges to offset subscription revenue? Should Gutenberg suggest that BioOne pilot the OA model or stay status quo?

Teaching Objectives
