Finalist Judges (to-date)

Emma Hannay

Emma is a public health doctor with a focus on global health strategy and delivery. Her work has been centered at a global level on organizational strategy in global health, and access to new innovations in health. At the country level her work has centred on implementing health systems reforms in complex operating environments in Pakistan and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Most recently, she has served as FIND’s Chief Access Officer, supporting that organization’s efforts to expand access to effective diagnostic testing. She led FIND’s COVID response including the creation of the ACT-Accelerator Diagnostics Partnership, co-convened by FIND and the Global Fund, along with the World Health Organization. Prior to FIND, she held roles at Acasus, Unitaid and McKinsey & Company. Emma holds a medical degree from the University of Auckland, an MPH from Harvard University and a DrPH from Johns Hopkins University.

 

Matthias Ruger

Matthias is a consultant pediatric orthopedic surgeon, specialized in limb reconstruction at Children’s Hospital Zurich. In addition, he is a clinician scientist at ETH Zurich. In the space of digital health and personalized medicine, he developed a wide array of technologies, and authored a number of peer-reviewed publications and book chapters. He is teaching limb reconstruction techniques to medical and engineering students in Zurich, as well as internationally. Matthias graduated from RWTH Aachen Polytechnic University in Germany in 2003, received his medical doctorate magna cum laude and went on to complete his residencies in adult trauma and orthopedic surgery. He completed an AO spine fellowship, is a board certified emergency physician and continued to specialize in limb reconstruction and pediatric orthopedic surgery before his current position in Zurich. With his strong background in both clinical medicine and technology, Matthias leads the Global Surgery Foundation’s efforts in digital transformation and innovative technologies.

 

Judging Criteria

  • Topic/Content
    • The protagonist and case dilemma is clearly focused on a novel product or service technology appropriate for a low- and middle-income country (LMIC) setting.
    • The product or service technology contributes toward improving, maintaining or monitoring the health of a given population.
  • Teaching/Learning Value
    • Engages students into an active learning mode.
    • Provides students opportunities to analyze/solve relevant business issues related to a health product or service technology in a low- and middle-income country.
    • Contains elements allowing students to exercise higher-order, complex thinking. Requires more than just comprehension and memory.
  • Intro/Overview
    • Sparks interest & curiosity of the reader, drawing them into the narrative.
    • Clearly introduces the protagonist & organization/company.
    • Clearly identifies the dilemma, its time frame, & its tension/urgency.
  • Protagonist/Organization
    • Protagonist & organization clearly identified in the case introduction.
    • There are appropriate details about the protagonist, including their role in the organization, career history, etc.
    • There are appropriate details about the organization or company such as mission, revenue, history, P&L statements, culture, geo locations, competitors, etc.
    • Adequate context is provided for both the protagonist and organization, relative to the concept of the case.
  • Dilemma
    • Dilemma & time frame clearly identified in the case introduction, along with its urgency.
    • Dilemma can realistically be solved by the protagonist.
    • Dilemma has applicability beyond the immediate situation described in the case.
    • Case specifies at least two questions that students need to address to solve the dilemma.
    • Dilemma challenges students to analyze the situation & develop multiple, integrative solutions.
  • Writing/Citations & Endnotes
    • Documents are free from structural, grammatical, spelling, & typographical errors.
    • Complete citations & endnotes are included for any quoted material such as facts, figures, & other data.
  • Teaching Note
    • Includes clear, measurable teaching objectives.
    • Pedagogy identifies case audience, business disciplines, & prerequisite knowledge or courses.
    • Assignment questions can be answered based on information provided in the case.
    • Includes comprehensive answers to assignment questions, along with appropriate analysis.
    • Includes explanations/sources for conceptual frameworks &/or business models students should use in their case analysis.
    • Includes a teaching plan that suggests how to allocate time in-class for the case discussion.

Review and Judging Process

  • The first round review will be double-blind, i.e., the reviewers will not know the identity of the submitting author(s), and vice versa.
  • Finalist judging will be reverse single-blind, i.e., finalist judges will not know the identity of the submitting author(s), but authors will know the identity of the finalist judges, as they are featured above.
